For some time now, macOS has been hiding a feature that is rather unknown to many users – the immediate deletion of files and folders. The feature completely bypasses the recycle bin and deletes the contents directly and irrevocably, so that you don’t have to empty the recycle bin. However, you can use the function in two different ways to delete files immediately.
Note: If you delete a file in one of the following two ways, it is almost irrevocably removed from your Mac. Only a backup can help in this case possibly to retrieve the file.
Delete files instantly with a keyboard shortcut
Keyboard shortcuts are extremely helpful and easy to use. The “Delete Immediately” function can also be called via such a shortcut:
Select one or more files or folders that you want to delete with immediate effect, and then press the following key combination on your keyboard: Option key (alt) + Command key (cmd) + Backspace. Confirm the process by clicking Delete in the dialog box.
Delete files instantly via Finder options
Alternatively, you can delete the files from the Finder’s menu bar:
Select one or more files or folders that you want to delete with immediate effect. Then click “Drop” in the menu bar and hold down the option key (old) at the same time.
Select “Delete Immediately” from the menu. Confirm the process by clicking Delete in the dialog box. Even with this alternative route, the files and folders are permanently deleted with immediate effect and do not end up in the recycle bin.
Clean your Mac automatically
Here is a small diagram that shows the main types of junk files found on computers, sorted by size. Some of them are easily accessible (files in the recycle bin, for example), while others are stored deep in the system folders. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to erase them, and technical skills are required.
If you don’t feel like spending the next few hours cleaning your Mac manually, you can use a powerful tool called CleanMyMac X to identify and remove unnecessary content from your Mac. It knows which files are unnecessary, where they are located, and how to delete them entirely. CleanMyMac includes all the tools you need to clean the same items in less than five minutes as with a three-hour manual cleaning. It can even delete junk files you don’t know to exist and give your computer a boost.
Clean up Mac’s system storage with CleanMyMac X:
- Download CleanMyMac X for free here.
- Run the application and click on System.
- Click on Analyze.
- Tap Clean to get rid of unnecessary files.
And There you go! Your Mac already looks much better.
Have a good cleaning!
